Poetry

Salem

By: Justin Palatsky

There’s talk of a spirit trapped between worlds,

Haunting and hiding in the shadows of the town.

Items seem to move by neither man nor beast,

Including the skeletons trapped underground.

Fallacy has plagued this village for years,

Ever since young Anna Walker burned at the stake.

Outlawed black cats and discarded mirrors,

Have oddly been reappearing as of late.

The denizens gather in the town hall every week

Discussing their peculiar situation,

Barricade your doors and light your torches,

Said the governor feeding to the superstition.

Pioneers and heretics are not welcomed here,

And they’ll burn whoever feeds to the bedlam.

But skeptics say violence doesn’t scare the dead

And it sure as hell doesn’t scare Anna’s phantom.

It’s amazing how one death can cause such chaos,

And how her alleged heresy can ignite hysteria,

And kids, I bet you did not know this,

Anna Walker has still been seen around this area.

Three hundred years later incidents still happen,

And the unexplainable is blamed purely on the dead.

When something weird goes bump in the night,

How come no one asks, maybe Anna wants a friend?
